Dental Sealants Can Help Preserve Your Oral Health
Dental sealants are a preventive dental treatment designed to protect teeth from decay, particularly in children and adolescents. These thin, plastic coatings are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, specifically the molars, where cavities are most likely to occur. The sealants form a barrier that keeps food particles and bacteria from settling into the grooves and pits of the teeth, significantly reducing the risk of cavities.
The application process for dental sealants is quick and painless, typically completed within a single dental visit. First, your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned to remove any plaque and debris. After drying the tooth surface, an acidic solution is applied to create a rough texture, which helps the sealant adhere better.
Once the tooth is prepared, the sealant material is carefully painted onto the enamel surface, filling in deep grooves or depressions to prevent cavities. Finally, a special curing light may be used to harden the sealant, creating a smooth, durable, and effective protective layer to protect teeth from decay for many years to come.
Regular dental check-ups are essential to monitor the condition of the sealants, which can last several years with proper care. If the sealants wear down or chip, they can be easily reapplied, providing ongoing protection against dental decay.
The ideal time to apply sealants is soon after permanent molars emerge – typically around age 6 for first molars and age 12 for second molars. However, teenagers and adults without decay or fillings in their molars can still benefit from this preventive treatment.
